Robert Bandsma

Pediatric Gastroenterologist
Hospital for Sick Children

Dr. Robert Bandsma is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist and clinician scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and is cross-appointed at the University of Malawi. He completed his medical training at the University of Groningen. His early research focused on the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and he received his PhD cum laude. In 2008, he joined the Division of Gastroenterology first as a clinical fellow and is currently working as a staff gastroenterologist at SickKids. His research program aims to understand the relation between nutrition, gut health and metabolism, with the ultimate aim to develop novel interventions to reduce mortality in vulnerable undernourished children. He has received a number of prestigious awards, including a NASPGHAN Young Investigator Award. His work is supported the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Canadian Institute for Health Research.
